The Importance of Cleaning
Just as your car requires cleaning when it gets dirty, the same goes for the forklift. The cleaning method will depend on your forklift’s power type. For an electric forklift, using a broom to remove accumulated dust and utilizing an air compressor or biodegradable, non-toxic cleaning solutions are recommended. Be cautious with water, which could affect the electrical components, and be careful to avoid any electrical damage.
According to the Linde Service Guide, “the use of steam cleaning or strong degreasing agents should be carried out with caution, as they can remove the grease from life-lubricated bearings, causing irreversible damage. Once the grease is removed, it’s not possible to relubricate the bearings.”
For non-electric forklifts, using a pressure washer is advised for removing stubborn dirt. This method also allows maintaining a safe distance during cleaning, protecting the operator from dangerous projections.
The Linde operator manual also specifies that “cleaning with water jet (high pressure or steam) should not be directly applied to areas of the front axle, electrical or electronic components, connectors, or insulating materials. Water should not be used to clean the central electrical system or control console.”
Do not Neglect the Underside
It’s common to clean what is visible, but the hidden parts of the forklift require just as much attention. Depending on your work environment, your forklift may be exposed to various conditions. Dirt and grime accumulating in these hard-to-reach areas can lead to potential chassis issues. Cleaning these areas prevents future problems.
Cleaning from Top to Bottom
For particularly dirty areas, soaking your forklift might be necessary. This will help soften the accumulated dirt, making it easier to clean. Always start from the top and work your way down, allowing the dirt to flow naturally, thus avoiding the need to clean the same areas again.
Allow Adequate Drying Time
Once your forklift is clean, ensure to park it in a place where it can dry properly, ideally in the sun. By allowing your forklift to dry, you ensure its components function efficiently and prevent damage to its parts.
Protect Yourself
Regardless of the cleaning method chosen, it is essential to wear protective equipment. Using cleaning products or tools can project harmful substances. Wear goggles, boots, protective gloves, as well as long sleeves and pants to protect your skin.
If you encounter difficulties while cleaning your forklift, our maintenance and service team is always available to assist you.
